The Village People were and are one of those bands that has always been popular. And not just for their music, but for what they stand for. The Village People was formed in 1977 and is well known for their unique costumes depicting American cultural stereotypes. They originally started out to fill a niche with disco’s gay audience by featuring popular gay fantasy persona’s, but the band’s catchy lyrics and uniqueness quickly brought them into mainstream popularity.
The original members include: Victor Willis (the police officer character), Felipe Rose (the Indian), Randy Jones (the cowboy), Glenn Hughes (the biker), David Hodo (the construction worker) and Alex Briley (the G.I.). They took the simplest of lyrics and most suggestive of phrases and made it into something to dance to, enjoy, and of course sing along with. No other unique band has been able to capitalize on disco the way they did… the YMCA song has been and probably always will be remembered and sung at baseball stadiums, proms, and dances for years to come. Since we did a nice story yesterday about Randy Macho Man, the wrestler that recently passed away, we thought it would be fitting to give him one more tribute with this song being that he truly was a Macho..
